Our History

The Art Students' Guild of Brevard is a unique gem in the heart of Melbourne, Florida.  Join us in the historic downtown for our open studio live model sessions, in a unique artist loft environment.

TASGOB was founded in 1961 by Elliot McMurrough and moved to our present location in 1962. Our spacious loft on the third floor of 909 E. New Haven Avenue is called home by a select group of honored member artists, and welcomes visitors during our regularly scheduled events.

Visitors may simply be interested in touring the studio and seeing the talent of TASGOB members, or wish to join in the fun and comparatively rare opportunity to draw or paint with a group.

TASGOB is dedicated to keeping portraiture and plein air artistry alive. Open Studio Sessions with live models, Plein Air meetups, and special Instructor-led Workshops are mainstays of our tradition.

About Our Founder

Eliot McMurrough of Indialantic 1919-1976

Painting by Eliot courtesy of Marti Meyers
Eliot was a member of the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne, Florida. He was a well-known painter, teacher and art lecturer, and a long-time Space Coast resident. McMurrough came to Brevard from Sarasota in 1959, locating his art exhibits and demonstrations at U.S. 1 and Ballard Dr. in old Eau Gallie. He later moved to the old Melbourne church building at Waverly Place and Strawbridge Avenue. For a time he shared an office with Dr. Keuper at the Brevard Engineering College (now F.I.T.), ultimately establishing the Eliot McMurrough School of Art on Fifth Avenue, Indialantic.

McMurrough's impressive biography was evidence of his respected position in the art world. He has been listed in the Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and the Dictionary of International Biography. He won the coveted Governor's Award in '61, '65, '66 and '68. His paintings have been shown in national shows in the U.S. and Canada, and his works have appeared in the publication, "Prize-Winning Graphics." In addition, he taught at the Ringling School of Art, Lock Haven Art Center, and was a former director of the Florida Federation of Art Summer School.
